Pinda Pradanam Procedure — Godavari Pushkaralu 2027 Ritual Guide

Pinda Pradanam is the offering of cooked rice balls (pindas) to ancestors during shraddha and tarpanam rituals. At Godavari Pushkaralu 2027, performing Pinda Pradanam at the dedicated platforms at Gowthami Ghat is believed to grant moksha to ancestral souls who may be wandering as pretas (ethereal beings) and liberate them to the higher realms.

Difference from Tarpanam

While Tarpanam involves offering water with sesame seeds, Pinda Pradanam involves offering rice balls (pinda) made of cooked rice mixed with cow ghee, sesame seeds, and honey. Pinda Pradanam is required when the deceased’s last rites (antima samskara) are pending, or as part of the annual shraddha. It is a more elaborate ritual than simple tarpanam.

Pinda Preparation

Cook white rice on a banana leaf using cow ghee and a pinch of sesame seeds. Form into balls roughly the size of a small lemon. Three pindas are made: one for the father (pita), one for the grandfather (pitamaha), and one for the great-grandfather (prapitamaha). Females in the lineage have separate pindas. Add honey and tulsi leaves on top of each pinda.

The Ritual Steps

  1. Complete tridhanu snanam at Gowthami Ghat
  2. Sit on the dedicated Pinda Pradanam Vedika facing south
  3. Recite Sankalpam with priest stating purpose and ancestor names
  4. Place pindas on darbha grass mat with appropriate mantras
  5. Offer black sesame seeds and water to each pinda
  6. Offer cooked rice, vegetables, and dry fruits as bhojan to the pindas
  7. Recite Brahma-arpanam mantras for soul liberation
  8. Offer the pindas to the Godavari with namaskaram
  9. Conclude with brahmana bhojanam (feeding 3-5 priests) and dakshina
